Quote

"Truth and reality in art do not arise until you no longer understand what you are doing and are capable of, but nevertheless sense a power that grows in proportion to your resistance." - Matisse

Yves Tanguy

"The Ribbon of Extremes"
The French artist, Yves Tanguy, was a surrealist artist of the 20th century. His medium is mostly oil on canvas and his subject mater is comprised primarily of abstracted shapes on a blended background. What I found most intriguing about Tanguy's work was his soft blurred backgrounds contrasted with the hard almost cartoon like figures in the foreground. His limited color pallet sets the mood of the piece, cool colors being a sadder more melancholy mood, and brighter, warmer colors being more vivid and lively.
Although I am very interested in Tanguy's work, I can't really find a way to incorporate his techniques and styles into my surrealist piece. His color limitation, however, is something I may experiment with.

William Kentridge

William Kentridge

Describe the artist's concept/subject matter:

Kentridge is best known for his films, in which he uses animation to depict his work. He constructs them by filming a drawing, making erasures and changes, and filming it again.

Describe the mediums used and how this effects the overall concept of the work:

He employs the use of charcoal and with limited sections of pastel coloring. He will draw something, film a few frames, and then erasing and drawing some more. He manages to achieve extreme depth through using this technique. The drawings are later displayed along with the films as finished pieces of art.

Explain what interests you about this artist, how do you relate the artist's work to your own?:

His work deals a lot with movement, and as movement is something I am interested in portraying, I enjoy his work greatly. His use of animated films in combination with sketches and erasures I find to be very creative. I enjoy working with pastel, and therefor could relate to the medium he used. His subjects I find to be creative and his final pieces intriguing.

work so far...

Some of my work so far isn't as centralized around movement as I would like. I have some chalk pastel sketches of a tree, clouds, and a dance studio. I wanted to start with some simple black and white pieces to ease into the concentration. I highlight the lights and darks,in an attempt to emphasize the flow of shadows and movement. Like I said before, I would like to also look at the movement of change, instead of just the obvious physical movement.

What is the central idea of my concentration?

Concentration:
My concentration will focus on movement. Whether it be movement in nature or in the human form. I would like to study how movement can change the perspective of an object. Although movement is hard to capture in a piece of art work, I want to try depict it through slightly more obscure concepts. Such as the movement of thought, or the movement of a wave, or the movement of fabric. Many things can have movement, outside the normal concept of physical movement or motion. Throughout my concentration I would like to experiment with change. Change being influenced by motion and movement.
